National Steinbeck Center Art Classes & Workshops

Starting Summer 2010, the National Steinbeck Center, in conjunction with the Salinas Valley Art Association, will offer an annual series of art workshops with Nationally acclaimed artists as well as 10-week long art classes taught by Art Association president, Paula Vershay. The Salinas Valley Art Association is a nonprofit organization established for the purpose of promoting and stimulating artists within the Salinas Valley through group meetings with art demonstrations, workshops, exhibits and social activities. SVAA shall endeavor to nurture an environment that supports and helps to develop creativity, innovation and diversity of artistic thought and expression in order to contribute to the awareness and enhancement of the rich and diverse culture of the Salinas Valley.

Watercolor

September 22 – December 1, 2010, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Drawing

September 24 – December 3, 2010, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

10-week class, every Friday. For adult artists, beginning fundamentals. Students will learn basic drawing techniques and perspective through class and homework assignments. Oil Painting

Staff, Paula VershayInstructor Paula Vershay has encompassed a multi-faceted approach to the arts. Having had her start in the study of architecture, she found painting to be her true vocation. She has produced murals, owned and operated an art gallery, studio and retail store. She was featured in a series of how to paint television programs, and has been a credentialed instructor at Salinas Adult School for the past ten years. She currently serves as the President of the Salinas Valley Art Association.

Ed Avila: Pastel Techniques

Saturday, September 11, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Learn the art and inside secrets of pastel painting from a local favorite, Ed Avila. For adult artists, beginning level to advanced. First half of the workshop instructor will introduce different techniques of pastel painting. In the second half of the workshop students will create an original pastel art piece. Shirley Brocchini: Portrait Sketching

Sunday, October 3, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Learn the art and inside secrets of portrait sketching from a local portrait specialist , Shirley Brocchini. For adult artists, beginning level to advanced. Bring a up-close photo of a child or pet, or use one of Shirley's. The workshop will teach the art of likeness in portrait painting and students will learn to make a painting that is better then a photograph! Supplies not included. Dale Laitenin: Plein Air in Moss Landing

Saturday, October 23, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Enjoy a special Plein Air trip with world-class teacher and Plein Air artist, Dale Laitenin. For adult artists, beginning level to advanced. Master the art of Plein Air in Moss Landing. He will take a group of artists to Moss Landing to paint the harbor and surrounding scenes. Ed Avila: Photography

Sunday, November 7, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Grab a camera and learn the art and inside secrets of pastel painting from a local favorite, Ed Avila. For adult artists, beginning level to advanced. Students will learn the art of taking the perfect photo to be used for of their paintings (or just to put on the wall) and will learn about photo composition. Camera's not included.
