Steinbeck in Monterey – From Cannery Row to Sea of Cortez

An Unforgettable Evening of Conversation with Humanities Scholar Clay Jenkinson and Steinbeck Expert Russ Eagle

Step into the world of John Steinbeck and explore the vibrant Monterey landscape that inspired some of his most enduring works. The National Steinbeck Center, in proud partnership with the Monterey History and Art Association and Listening to America, invites you to a special evening dedicated to the stories behind the stories.

Join us for a lively, insightful conversation as nationally acclaimed scholar Clay Jenkinson and Steinbeck expert Russ Eagle take the stage. Together, they will delve into the rich history and literary genius of Steinbeck’s Monterey years, examining the beloved classics that capture the soul of this unique region, including Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, and Sea of Cortez.

Guests will come away with a deeper appreciation for the author, his powerful connection to place, and the characters who walked the streets of Monterey and sailed the waters of the Sea of Cortez. Whether you are a lifelong Steinbeck aficionado or a curious newcomer to his work, this “educational night out” promises to be an enriching and thoroughly engaging cultural experience.

The program will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience, offering a rare opportunity to interact directly with our distinguished speakers.
